Citiwater –Sustainability Indicators and Assessment

Project: Citiwater project developing a core set of Regulator-agreed Sustainability Indicators with assistance of Advanced Wastewater Management Centre, University of Queensland

Benefits to Council: Assists Council to improve Triple Bottom Line (TBL) performance in provision of water services. Opportunity to identify techiques to lower the economic and environmental cost of Council's water services.

Cost/Funding:  Feasiblity costs funded by TCC and University of Queensland partnership.

Citiwater - Methane Capture Projects

Project: Citiwater, in conjunction with Stanwell Corp and Ergon Energy has installed methane burning generators at Mt St John and Cleveland Bay Purification Plants.

Benefits to Council: Creates a profit centre from what was previously a waste (Council sells the methane to Stanwell). Demonstrates cost effective solution to greenhouse gas emissions. Provides corporate knowledge of methane harvesting and energy production (and potential for transfer of idea/technology to TCC landfill methane harvesting options - currently under investigation by Citiwaste).

Cost/Funding: Small economic return to Council from selling methane to Stanwell. Project financed by Stanwell Corp. Major Greenhouse abatement benefit which can be promoted by Council.

Citiwater -Magnetic Island Water Recycling Project

Project: Membrane bioreactor technology used to purify treated wastewater for reuse as irrigation on golf course.

Benefits to Council: Magnetic Island Water Recycling ( 205kb .pdf brochure) develops technical capabilities of council in waste water management and recycling. Ensures Council meets EPA obligations and provides an enhanced environmental management service and protection to the Reef. Creates a resource from what was a waste. Reduce costs to Council in provision of town water and waste water treatment.

Cost/Funding: Undertaken as part of Citiwater infrastructure upgrade.

Citiwater -Water Projects with Parks Services

Project: Citiwater has agreed to fund water efficiency projects (eg. see example type)through the Sustainable Townsville Investment Initiative. The projects, predominantly installation of subsurface irrigation and soil moisture monitoring, will be developed and implemented by Parks Services.

Benefits to Council: Reduced water consumption in Council operations (greening & irrigation), reduction of overspill of water to roads, reduced costs for purchase of bulk water, reduced complaints to Council re water overspill.

Cost/Funding: Financed internally by Citiwater via the Sustainable Townsville Investment Initiative, subject to certain quality control and financial benchmarks being achieved.

Citiwater -Water Recycling with Renewable Energy

Project: Proposal to develop industrial scale water recycling capabilities at Cleveland Bay Purification Plant (CBPP) and consideration for the use of renewable energy (ie. wind turbines), thus providing water reuse (recycling) without increasing Greenhouse emmisions.

Benefits to Council: Highly significant sustainable development initiative for Townsville. Develops a signficantReduced water consumption in Council operations (greening & irrigation), reduction of overspill of water to roads, reduced costs for purchase of bulk water, reduced complaints to Council re water overspill.

Cost/Funding: Financed by internally by Citiwater via the Sustainable Townsville Investment Initiative, subject to certain quality control and financial benchmarks being achieved.
