The launching of the program included the planting of a two metre shade tree, a small native tree planting with the schools children and a talk on "Why Trees Are Great" presented by Council’s Horticultural Officer.

Participating students had the choice of taking home a native tree or a shrub to plant on their own backyards and were presented with student information package containing various environmental education materials, brochures and leaflets plus species description fact sheet of the tree/shrub received.

The Schools Shade Tree Program is a part of the Greening Townsville Program, which supports Townsville schools to establish shade trees in school grounds; promote 'Sunsafe' practices; and to foster partnerships between Council and schools by involving school children in greening and tree planting activities. The program also compliments previous tree planting efforts undertaken by schools throughout Townsville such as through Schools National Tree Day.
