Common Name: Native Dutchman’s pipe
   
Family: Myrtaceae
   
Form and Size: Tall, vigorous climber, 10-20m tall, which twines over available support.
   
Distribution: Coastal rainforests of northern Australia, and occasionally in dries scrubs where it may die back annually to the rootstock.
   
Leaves: Elongated heart-shape, leathery, dull green, 10-30cm x 8-12cm.
   
Flowers: Dark brown or purplish, tubular 4-6cm long; in short racemes on new growth.
   
Flowering Period: Throughout the year.
   
Fruit: Capsule, egg-shaped, about 3cm long, ribbed, splitting at the top to resemble an inverted parachute.
   
Cultivation/Notes: Propagate from seed or cuttings. A vigorous climber preferring semi-shade and regular watering. Food plant for the Cairns Birdwing, Red Bodied Swallowtail and Big Greasy Butterflies.
