THE HISTORY
The Picnic Bay foreshore has been a popular picnic place and
excursion destination from the earliest days of settlement, and
takes its name from these activities.
The official name used for the first settlement at Picnic Bay
was the local Aboriginal name for the bay, Ca-moo-milli. The name
was officially changed to Picnic Bay in 1963.
The first hotel and jetty on Magnetic Island was built at Picnic
Bay in the early 1900s, by Robert Hayles.
The Picnic Bay Surf Lifesaving Club has been associated with
the Bay since 1927, and the first swimming enclosure was constructed
in 1930.
